Project Information

I needed more tops to give away at the show tomorrow so I spit a cherry lot that was ready to go into the wood furnace because it cracked all the way through. I got enough pieces to make 11 tops and found a cracked piece of hard maple burl and made the 12th out of it.
I wanted to try a different design with most of the mass on the outer ring and most of them are turned that way.
I tried all these tops when I made them but the ones with the thick outer ring spin the easiest and the longest.

They are 1 3/4" to 2 3/4" in diameter and finished with clear matte spray.

Cheers, Jim

As generous as this is I believe you like to be on the lathe more. I don't blame you Jim.
The heavier mass of outer weight is a good choice.

Thank you all for the nice comments. I hope the kids like them…they are not I-Tops with a screen and keypad!
I'll bet none of the little kids have ever seen a top. Maybe their parents can show them how to work it!!

Hi Dave, I can find any excuse to be on that new lathe. I love it. These were fun to make late at night with the radio on and turning out what ever shape comes to mind. I used that new collet holder and it runs soooo true.

Hi Lew, that dark one from the burl is the hardest to get to spin using the top handle. I think I have too much mass on the bottom. But, it goes like the devil when you start it by spinning the body!!

Jim, this is a real nice collection. I love these little tops and I know that they are favorite items at the various craft fairs. Nice work.

Thanks Charles and Roger. I gave 5 away today. Not many kids at the sale!
A few don't spin real well. I will re-cut them with all the weight on the outer ring.
