Project Information

Found this in an antique shop for $80. Okay, it was complete and salvageable, just in need of some TLC. The tote and nob were stripped and then covered in Mohawk walnut grain filler to get some color into the beech they used with these planes-made by Stanley for Wards. I flattened the sole. I'm off-work this month, so I had the time for this…. New paint, sharpening, and the project-shavings!

That's a good price for a jointer in nice condition. And you did a great job with the restoration. What kind of paint did you use, and how did you strip the japanning first?

I really like those big hand planes. You have done a great job refurbishing it. They are a wonderful tool to use and if kept sharp they are indispensable.

I used soap and water to clean up the plane only, then used the worn japaning as a primer. Covered it with a Krylon wrinkle-black spray (#3370), which is not made anymore-had some extra cans in the garage. The effect of the wrinkling makes anyone look talented! But this type of paint can be found at any auto parts store. Not a resto but a refurbishing-I only buy tools to use. Well, most of them.

The only way I have found to plane on a Workmate is to clamp board at one end and sit on the other.
