Project Information

A couple more end grain boards, in the first pic, the one on the left is Hard Maple and Purpleheart, and the right is Cherry and Black Walnut.

The goal was that the lighter background color would melt into the darker checker board pattern, and it mostly came true, but there is no getting around the "character" of the wood that tells on you…....

Also looking for more pleasing patterns as some of my boards get a bit busy. The patterns are simple, but the execution is trickier than it looks…...a good challenge for sure.

Here's a few build photos:

Checker board strips.

Gluing up the strips, that's 2 sets stacked up as all the strips were 1-1/4" square.

The boards were both glued up in individual 1-1/4" blocks.

Then the borders were glued on last.

The Cherry board has a border on it that I thought was Walnut (it came out of the Walnut scrap bin!!) but it seems to be a Cherry border on a Cherry board…......oops…....rookie mistake..

The Maple board has a few blocks with "extra character"........yep. While ripping stock, I was certain I had enough for 3 strips from each board…......wrong! Plan B initiated, and didn't see the "character" until the mineral oil was applied.

Another brick in the wall…......

Have a happy 4th!

Thanks for looking.

Looking good Jeff. Glad you're getting therapy. I could use some, but I haven't had shop time in weeks. Maybe next week.

If you like them, they are exactly what they should be.

FWIW, they look great to me, and I aspire to find time to do boards assembled like these. Well done!

Hey Jeff,
Good looking boards. Not wild or 3D but still a true wonder.

More great boards, Jeff! I feel your frustration on the cherry in the walnut pile. I reached into my cherry boards and got poplar. Project turned out ok, just not what I was expecting. LOL Thanks for sharing.
