Project Information

It has been a good year for me finding local wood to turn.
Here is a natural edge bowl made from mulberry that was harvested just last week.
I live in Las Vegas, Nv. and back on 5/20 we had a wind storm that took down this mulberry tree.
I friend found this tree on craigslist, and we went over and got all we could haul. Free wood in the desert.
Gotta love it. I had a class with Jimmy Clewes Wednesday night and several of us used this wood to turn some bowls.
This is the most amazing wood I have ever turned. I had heard that mulberry looked good, but had no idea is would be so wild in color and figure.

Hi Jim, it was a lucky find. I am always on the look out for free wood. This last wind storm was very helpful.
In this case the property owner could not affored to have this tree removed, so the neighborhood came together to help her.
A fellow club member found the craigslist ad. And we went over and cut up all we could.
I have already started making blanks out of it to share with the group.

The color and figure are impressive. I will have to keep my eye out for some mulberry. I'm trying to forge a good working relationship with a tree service in my area.

I really like seeing local wood from downed trees made into something rather than burned as firewood or, worse, deposited at the county dump. It's especially nice that the whole club got in on this.

RichCMD I agree, I have a local tree trimmer that keeps the larger chunks for firewood sale.
they let me come in a pick and choose what I want. normally I take a something I have turned to give away, and they let me take some wood for free. Very hit or miss on what you find though.

Great score on the free wood and great job on turning the bowl. Keep your eye on that mulberry wood - it darkens with age and exposure to light. It is a breeze to work with, even thoroughly dry the bark will come off in sheets.

Thanks for posting.
