Project Information

I have ten grandchildren and I have taken on the challenge to make a blanket chest for each of them. These are the first two.
First, I did the walnut one, I found Glen Huey's plans in the August 2009 edition of Popular Woodworking. He had this full size one and a 3/4 version I built for the small space in my mother's apartment. Very popular with the ladies was the till box with a secret compartment.
In the December 1996 edition of American Woodworker, R. S. Wilkerson has plans for a Connecticut Blanket Chest I decided to do in cherry. Again, the till and secret compartment were well received as was the Chippendale hardware and the beautiful skirt.

Your grandchildren are lucky to have such a generous and talented grandfather ! Good job on both chests. I have to ask though, "Where are the secret compartments?"

Thanks for the comment. The front of the till box raises straight up to reveal a space under the false floor.

Nicely done Jack. I'll send you a picture of our antique chest… Very similar… Great looking dovetails, btw.

Classic old school design with clasic woodworking elements. I like that rustic massive design.

That's quite a task considering you have ten to build. Nice work.

What a great chest. My father and his older brother teamed up to do the same thing for their granddaughters, twelve I think. They did them all in cedar. Theirs were nice, but yours are beautiful.

I have not seen one of the so called "Pennsylvania Chests" in cherry. I like it though. Both are beautiful. Those are a gift of time, skill, and love for the grandchildren. Thanks for posting.
