Project Information

Just playing with color on this oak, end grain, hollow form. It measures 4.75 inches by 3.5 inches. It was finished with aniline dye, spray lacquer, and tinted green wax. I am pleased with how the yellow ray flecks, orange/red and green all work together. All comments, especially critiques, are welcomed and appreciated.

Neat piece, it reminds me of an acorn, the grain gives it some of that look, as it gives an elongated feeling to it and it's oak. Maybe it's just me, but a it's a nice on Joe.

Beautiful Joe. Very cool how the curve of the piece in conjunction with the light "flecks" accross the grain give a circular effect.

Thanks for posting it.

I don't know how you can expect anything but positive comments about your turnings, Joe. I mean, I'd like to help you out with some constructive criticism…. I just can't come up with any. :)

I love the multiple patterns. Really, quite a stunning piece.

Here's a thought: On a different piece or sample of wood - What if you applied a dark coat such as black or midnight blue over the red to only allow a hint of the reds to show through, like that of a red and black carved lacquer vase?

I like the shoulder on this one better than any of the other one's I've seen you do. I think that the only think I would have done differently is to tuck the foot completely under so it appeared "full round". By doing this, it would give the foot a shadow line and create a visual "lift".

Also, love the care you've taken in aligning the grain to get the best out of the wood. Oak isn't usually this exciting…

Very nice form..as always.
The tinting is something you have down to an art.

Wondering about the circular marks on the piece. Appears to be a lot of sanding marks, cross grain. Maybe you need a little more time spent on the finish sanding….. ?

Thanks for all the feedback.

Steven, thanks for the insightful suggestions.

Toyguy, the cross grain marks are actually the ray flecks in the oak. It is difficult to see in the photograph, but the ray flecks are yellow in comparison the the red/orange of the body. The piece was sanded to 600 grit. There are no visible sanding marks.

Dan, I am doing an art show in two weeks. I will try and get some group shots. The best pieces are displayed on my mantle and built in bookcase surrounding my fireplace.

Where is the show Joe? I would give my right, cancer filled you know what, to be there. Good luck with it. I knew you could do it pal. Will you be doing it alone or with others? Another beauty.
