Project Information

Spent some time recently trolling through my friends firewood pile and came upon a small Y of wood that showed promise. My first bowl attempt from it failed due lack of depth perception on my part. The second attempt was a great success, IMHO.

I like this scrounging for wood and making cool stuff. The species is unkown, the finish is CA and I'm still honing the process. I feel some little ridges. I'll get there. Just have to follow Capt. Eddie's advice better, I think.

Thanks all. Jim, no I haven't taken the whole pile yet, but I am going to go pick up another chunk or five this weekend.

One of my favorite sources of wood….the fire wood pile. Nice piece with the contrasting colors.

I would like to suggest you try one of the hard finish salad bowl finishes. Behlens and General both make good ones. Behlen's tends to be a little thicker but both need 3+ applications with light sanding between. Much easier to use than CA….cheaper too for large applications. I find the finish stands up to years of use. One friend used her bowl almost daily for several years before it wore through. She brought it back too late to repair (salad oil soaked into the wood) so I made her a new one.

Nice looking bowl and I really like the natural color. That could be mulberry. I recently cut off a dead limb from a mulberry tree in my yard that I turned a couple small bowls from. Here's the link http://lumberjocks.com/projects/318929
