Project Information

My first humidor completed and many thanks to Douglas, Tom and Caver for their tips and advice, much appreciated!

This is obviousley Curly Maple with Sapele for the lift and keys. Lined throughout with Spanish Cedar.
The top lining is integrated with the top of the box and also the bottom lining is integrated with the box.
The interior lining is pressure fit with a tack of CA on the bottom edge. Probably not needed as it was
a good tight fit. As recommended, I made sure the top closes with a nice "whoosh".............

I upgraded to the Brusso hinges and lid stay. I used these hinges because I had them but next time I
will probably go with the exterior backstop hinges per Douglas's recommendation.
I haven't had much experience with hinges…............. "they can be a challenge, huh"....
I guess I'll get better with time.

The interior divider and tray are removable.
The customer had his own Humidifior and Hygrometer so they are not shown.

Dimensions are: 13×9 x 5

Finish is multiple coats of Watco Danish Oil and Black Bison wax.

Thanks and any comments or tips on installing hinges or doing things differently, please fire away….....

Gene, you have certainly done yourself proud on this one. Beautiful, well-thought and executed. I especially like the interior dividers and tray, which really purpose the box nicely. And the maple is stunning. Great job!

I really like this project. I have been throwing around the idea of a humidor and I really like yours. I may use it as a base. Great work.

That is AWESOME. I've been thinking about making one of those for a long time now.
My brother in law brought me back a case of Cubans and I ended up having to give them away because I just couldn't bear to see them all dry up.
Great job.. I really like the wood…

Gene, just saw your PM, sorry I didn't get back to you, haven't been on the site in a while, but judging by the looks of it, you don't need any help!

That humidor looks excellent! As for the hinges, you managed to mount a quadrant hinge, so most excellent work!

I've used those backstop hinges, but I'm not too fond of them on a lighter weight box as they tend to tip if you rely on them….But with a humidor, its probably not an issue. All Brusso stuff is high quality.

You were looking for any tips, and really, the only one I have is to try a consistent spacing on your keys, ie, if your lid is keyed centered 1/4 down, make that the spacing from the ends of the box itself. Though the offset key is fine too….I've done it both ways but prefer the evenly spaced keys….or maybe try a veneer key….I just this weekend end completed a cherry, lift lid humidor with padauk edge banding, maple burl top, and splined miters, I'll post it later for critique.

With input from Tom and Doug, this is exactly the high quality product I would expect. And your other boxes that you just posted are equally top shelf. Congrats! Now we just need to kick our games up another notch as Tom is getting better and better at this! We may never catch him!

Gene,
AllI can say is fine work! Thanks for the credit, but I did nothing. It was all you buddy! Keep pushing your skills. Don't worry about the hinges either… The skill is developed with practice. Don't wimp out with surface mounted hinges, because you know they would not look as well on this level of craftsmanship you are showing.

The lid lift is a nice touch. Too many I have seen look like a big chunk of wood stuck to the box. Yours is understated and does not detract from the box. I personally don't use them, but you nailed it.

JC, Thanks for the plug, but I feel I'm going to be passed by you and Gene in turn 4… (g)

Andrew Crawford is a true artist and an inspiration to me. I have all three of his books and they open your eyes to what is possible. At least, look at his slide show...

Thanks so much Tom for the kind words, but I think I have "several" more turns to make before I get close to you. Thanks for the link to fine-boxes, I went to each and every website…....... what a wonderful bunch of artists. I may get the "celebration of boxes" book.
