Project Information

Hello Lumberjocks,
Been a while since I've posted anything, so thought I would share the latest. A commission from a stogie smoker in MN, this Humidor is modeled off an article from Fine Woodworking: http://www.finewoodworking.com/woodworking-plans/article/free-plan-spanish-cedar-humidor.aspx The case is Spanish cedar sides, 1/2" MDF for the top and 1/4" Baltic Birch for the bottom. The veneer I chose was Pau Ferro from "joe woodworker" located in Forest Hill, MD http://www.veneersupplies.com/ the corner material is Ebony, bordered by shop made holly/mahogany banding. Hinges are from Andrew Crawford, http://smartboxmaker.com/; the very best hinges available (in my opinion). The Lock was purchased from Ian Hawthorne: http://www.jewelleryboxhardware.com/. The escutcheon is made from ebony and the same banding as used on perimeter. The finish is Behlen "Stringed Instrument Lacquer" nine coats over 2 coats of Behlen Vinyl Sealer. The lacquer was rubbed out between each three coats, starting with 360, 500 & 800 grits, with a final rub down with 1000 grit before using "Turtle Wax" rubbing compound followed by polishing compound. And finally a coat of Johnson's paste wax. "whew" ! The interior is completely lined with 3/16" Spanish cedar and accessorized with a foam Cigar Caddy humidifier, and a Hygroset Digital Hygrometer.
A satisfying build, I hope that it's owner is proud to use and show off his new "box"! Thanks for looking in !

Dave,
A delicious piece indeed! Great choice of woods, and the edging and line inlays work really well together. And the lock escutcheon is a great touch. All in perfect harmony. I really like it.

A thoroughly beautiful well-crafted box.
My niece has asked me to make her a box to distribute cigars to the "Gentlemen"
at her wedding in July.
I just signed in to research and your project is (deservedly) No.1.

Fantastic work. And you even clocked the screws to make sure the flat head slots all lined up.
