Project Information

The last of the Christmas boxes rolls off the 'production' line :) This one is walnut and birdseye maple, I used surface mounting hinges this time around because I never quite got perfect results mortising the Brusso ones in, I quite like the way the brass looks against the walnut though.

After four variations of this box I think it's time to move onto something new, but it was nice working on projects that were of a smaller scale than my usual fare, and I see a few more of these in my future.

The finish is a simple wipe on poly (and I still need to do finish the bit where I cut the top off).

Great box. I'm a firm believer that walnut and birdseye maple were made for each other.

your boxes that you've made are awesome. All of them look as though alot of attention to
detail is taken. I build boxes at the woodshop I work at also. Perfection is the ONLY exception.

I forgot one detail with regards finishing, the first coat was tung oil with a few drops of tint in it, really brought out the figure in the maple.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Hi again Damian - gorgeous box, love that timber.
Where those brusso quadrant hinges you tried before? My tutor has offered me a pair to use 'if I can make a box that deserves them'. Now there's a challenge…

Yes, the other boxes got the brusso hinges and I had an awful time aligning them, the ones I used here were soooo much easier :) The brusso's sure are nice though…
