Project Information
A friend asked if I would remodel his kitchen. The house was built in the 60's and the cabinets were stick built. They were in good shape except for some doors were warped and wouldn't close, and some drawers were stuck and/or damaged.
They also wanted to modify the cabinets where the original cook top was. And gut and refit the original pantry which had an oven and microwave stuck in it.
So, we demoed the existing cabinets surrounding the cook top and refrigerator. Their refrig was too tall to fit. Then we gutted the pantry and put in new shelves to support the new oven and microwave. Up top, a large storage area was created for his gumbo pot! Underneath the oven, I built a custom drawer to hold baking pans per his wife's request.
I built new cabinets to go above and to either side of their new 36 inch range and 42 inch vent hood. The cabinet above the refrigerator turned out to be a short one! The pics don't show the vent hood. It was still on back order when we finished.
The island peninsula was trimmed out using 1/2 inch birch plywood and poplar. I created the shaker look to match the new custom doors and drawer fronts. They were ordered from a nearby company that builds doors and drawer fronts exclusively.
I modified the end portion of the peninsula by cutting out the stile and adding new framework for two large drawers (pots and pan storage).
He hired a painter to do the painting. Thank goodness.
All doors use Blum soft close hinges. The drawers use full extension ball bearing soft close drawer slides (Custom Service Hardware brand). I built all new drawers from 1/2 inch Baltic birch.
The end result turned out nice. At some point, they plan to replace the counter top with granite.
Edit: I forgot to mention that we installed a dual trash can receptacle pullout immediately to the left of the dishwasher.
I will post some pics of the kitchen before we started in the next post.
