Project Information

My son and daughter-in-law asked me to build a toy box for my grandson. They gave me some dimensions but left it up to me what it should look like. Since they treasure him so much as the rest of us, I thought a treasure chest would be cool. I made it out of used bamboo flooring I removed from my sister-in law's house and some ambrosia maple I had for awhile. I reversed the floor planks so the rough side was on the outside and smooth side inside. It gave it a rugged look and my wife and I were happy with it. They wanted it to support someone sitting on it so I reinforced the top a bit. It's 36''w x 20'' d x 20'' h. Bought the hardware from Rockler. Finished with gloss Varathane polyurethane. Thanks for looking.
We will be giving it to them for Christmas.

Very nicely done, I really like how you've stuck to the theme with this.

I don't see any toybox lid supports, better get those installed asap or you grandson might play an actual one-handed pirate.

Looks super Dave and the details give it a lot of character. I like the color combination a lot too. Now you just have to fill it up with some treasure.

Thanks daglenn. I have some over sized tension supports on it. It cannot be slammed down on your finger. It was something I considered before building. Funny thing is when we were kids, we never had anything like that and learned the hard way when our fingers got caught. LoL

Thanks Mike. We willbe baby sitting my grandson tomorrow and I thought I take a picture of him in it as a treasure.

Thanks BuryBob.

Nice work!!!! I have used those torsion hinges too. They are great but expensive. Like the lock on the toy box too. No one is going to get that boy's toys!!!!

Great looking Toy Box Dave! Last one I built was for our three kids which are now in their 40's.
I think your toy box will last much longer than the one I built. Love your design!

I have two grandsons does that mean I need to make two of these?

I really like the looks of your toy box, enough to add to my favorites!

Very COOL Treasure Chest! They will LOVE it!

I like the way you constructed it… keeping the over weight DOWN & not weighing a ton…
COOL lid with those safety hinges… make a huge difference!

Looks nice and rugged too!

It has a Lock too… Hope it doesn't get Locked & the Key getting lost… :)

Merry Christmas!

Thanks John. This was one of those projects you can design so many different ways. It becomes confusing.

Redoak, believe me, it will have toys. First grandson, you know the deal. But he can climb in it too, I would of.

Sawdustonmyshoulder, you're right, they are expensive and work extremely well. They can use the lock for a TIME OUT. ha ha

Thanks madsass. It worked out great. The bamboo looks good and I have a lot of it.

Thanks Rick. Just hope it doesn't get confiscated for a storage chest.

Tony, thanks, but I think you are too modest. I would bet the one you built is still around.

Thankyou Lee, I'm actually proud of it myself.

Thanks for commenting david38, make me feel good inside.

Thanks oldnovice. That's a good question, either make two or one large one with a divider. But you know how that may work out.

Thanks Joe. Actually I'm good at picking those locks, don't ask. I have no idea what other wood toy boxes weigh but I would say this is heavy. Hope it last a long time.
