Project Information

A joiners mallet I made for my dad for Christmas. He's the one who got me hooked on woodworking when I was just a kid, and he's always there to answer my questions and help me through any project even though he lives 1000 miles away. Knowing him, he probably won't use this mallet but rather put it on a shelf.

I glued up 4 strips of maple for the handle, the head "I believe" is iroko that I resawed to to make the mortise for the handle (I don't trust my chisel skills quite yet). The wedges are some leftover purpleheart I had in the scrap bin. I shaped the handle using a rasp until it felt good in my hand. Sanded everything to 320g then a good rub down with 0000 steel wool. The finish is 4 coats of BLO with another rub down of steel wool after the 3rd coat. This is the first time I've used BLO and I'm quite happy with the results.
