Project Information

I know it's not the most interesting project post to look at, but I'm posting this more for documentation than anything for my own viewing pleasure years down the road.

I've only tried slimline pens so far, which seems to be the normal starting point for new pen turners.

Listed in the order I made them, starting with the first preview picture above:

Pen #1: Cherry (i think) - the one on the bottom in first picture
Pen #2: Corian countertop - the green one

I made the first two at a friend's shop where he taught me. Made with Robert Sorby tools.
It was after this I got the bug and bought a Rikon mini lathe, haha:

A couple of months later, I bought the Mini Easy Wood Tools and everything to make pens with. The last of the pens shown are made on my own lathe and the carbide tools.

Pen #3: Olivewood
Pen #4: Cocobolo
Pen #5: Padauk (on bottom in last picture)
Pen #6: Purpleheart (on top in last picture)

I recorded a couple of videos, if you're interested:
If you want to see more about the lathe:

Watch me make the cocobolo pen:

Here's the simple jig I use to drill the holes in the pen blanks:

I've ordered a few more pen kits from penn state industries to make for Christmas gifts this year. I have a couple of black titanium coming in (those are not cheap) and some gun metal kits.

If you made it this far, then thanks for reading!

Pens look good. Take your scraps and cut offs and glue them together and turn them down. Amazing how they turn out.

Haha, I know already how addictive it is. But, man, just getting into turning is so stinking expensive!

I am saving my scraps. I just sort of put the cutoffs in a pile without thinking and now there are a few pieces and I've realized I can use them to make a segmented pen or something. Thanks for the input!
