Project Information

Just finished the walnut island top that my wife wanted to replace the granite. She also wanted to remove some cabinets and install some matching solid wood floating shelves. I had never worked with such thick and long boards (island top's dimensions are 100" x 45" x 1.65" and the shelves are 34" x 12.5" x 1.8"). Numerous firsts on this project including making a planing sled for these wide and long boards, using two-part epoxy with black tint to fill holes, and making the brackets for hanging the shelves. The finish that she decided on was Rubio Monocoat with Walnut color and it couldn't have been any easier to apply. Still need to install under-shelf LED strip lights on the bottom shelves, fix the dry wall, paint and install some overhead directional can lights to shine on the shelves. Hope you enjoy!

Great job, I like the shelves, are they solid or a "torsion box" style.

Funny, this is exactly the project I just finished in our kitchen, but with elm. Island top, floating shelves, inset LED lighting….
I'll have to get around to posting mine soon.
Nice work!

Wow! With such fantastic wood you did the right thing by not fussing up with curly ques, inlays or 'accent' colors. Let the beautiful wood make the statement.
