Project Information

I'm always complaining about not having enough space in my workshop. It's something I think about every time I get bogged down with a mess that I make when working on a project. Every time I'm looking for things to learn on YouTube and Lumberjocks I seemed to keep running into these "Flip Tables" and don't ask me why but I always thought they were a bit goofy. So early this week I said what the hell, I'll give one of these Koo Koo looking flippers a try! Well I'm so glad I did and I think I missed the boat by about 14 years!!!! That's how long I've had the shop I'm in now. Anyway I really don't think this is goofy or Koo Koo anymore! I may have lost time but now I have gained some SPACE!!!! 3 day's and Bingo! Oh and it's mostly made using all scraps!
Thanks for looking in! All comments welcome good or bad!

Link to a very short 48 second video showing the table movement.

I added 4 new places to hold my Sanding Belt Work Rest, Sanding Belt's, Belt Erase's and Miter Gauge.

Here are some basic measurements.
I found a few mistakes in my lilst so I edited this on 10/3/15

Base foot print is 35" X 24" I used 2" x 4" framing lumber to built the base. (The overhang is 6" for the tool rack.)
Total height without wheels , 27 3/4" H
Wheels are your choice.
Table top 26" w x 24" d X 2 1/2" thick. Two 3/4" plywood pieces for top and bottom. Use 3/4" pieces sandwiched between the tops leaving 3"x 3" opening on the corners for the eye bolts. Use 3/4" filler plywood to encompass the rod. Sides are 24" H
Table height 20 1/2" from bottom of flip table to top of base.
Width between sides is 27".
I used a washer on the rod on both sides in-between the side frame and table top to hold a gap so the table wold not hit the sides.

1) Zinc Rod 5/8" x 30 5/8" L (HD's or Lowe's) comes in 36" length's so you'll have to cut it.

2) 1/8" Spring clip for end of rod. You'll need to drill a small hole at the end of the rod for those.

4) 5/8" washers, Large size.

4) Eye bolts 5" x 3/8"

4) 3/8" T-nuts if you make your own knobs.

4) 3/8" lock nuts to use as stops at the end of each eye bolts. (keeps the knob from spinning off the bolt)

4) 5" x 3/8" bolts to bolt planer down, use 4 lock nuts

4) 5" x 5/16" bolts to bolt the sander down, use 4 lock nuts

GREAT!!!! I like it…I like it a lot!

I have that Ridgid sander also, and the older Ryobi Rapid Set 13" planer model 1300.

I am always breaking my back pulling out, and putting back the sander under my down draft table, and the Planer is on a Shop Fox caster stand that takes up a huge footprint…

I am for sure gonna build me one of these "Koo Koo flippers", ha. Great design, I will copy it, THANKS bud!

(oh, what is that attachment for sander in pic with waht looks like a wooden wheel(s) set-up with a small belt of some sort/??...looks like you may have 'modified the plastic plate for the spindle attachment', is it a mini belt sander with mini sanding belt/?)

Great idea you have there for storing the spindle sander accessories ! I've been pondering over a flip cart design with just a drawer for storage. But now I may change that because of what I see here….Thanks for sharing !...Added to favorites !

Nice Flippin' Table!
I built one too but I wasn't as smart as you. When I flipped it the first time I realized that all of the little washers on the Ridgid sander do not stay in their slots when inverted.
Two of them have fallen into the machine and I have not been able to retrieve them to this day.
Live and learn, right?

A well thought out flipper Tony. Even your accessories have a spot. That is some great thinking.
I would need to do this to about 1/3 of my shop at one time to gain some room.

Hey Tony, that sure is a great solution to your space problem. As I said privately, I reckon that I need to do the same.
At this point in time I have a narrow pathway to access my gear, and that is not good. Maybe I just need a bigger Shed/shop. Hmmmmm, now that is a good idea, I wonder what SWMBO would say if I laid that on her.
?.
Well done mate, and thanks for sharing this.

@ Chem,
Before I posted this flipping table I was telling Bob Wemm and Don (Rockbuste) the first time I flipped the table with the sander and planer attached I heard something fall out on to the bottom of the table. It was two little bolts just like the ones that hold the planer blades on. I checked to see if there were any missing and there was non missing at all. My planer was not new it was a reconditioned model. I must admin I was taken back a few notches after seeing those 2 bolts.

Now for those washers you have floating around Chem.
I gave the table another flip and heard something bouncing around inside the sander this time. So I unbolted it from the flipping table turned the sander upside down and after removing 4 screws the bottom came right off and I found those 2 washers floating around.

At this point I wold like to say Thank you to everyone for all the nice comments. If anyone need more info about this just ask here or PM me!

Like the latch a lot sturdier looking thank he ones I've seen that suggest using so,e sliding clasps.

It's got a thick table; I've been gathering parts for one of my own and was planning on 3". Two slices of 3/4 ply sandwiched. Did you go thicker coz of the bolt lock design or do you feel the table needs the extra strength?

Thanks Roger, ChuckH and HuckD,

ChuckH, My table may look thick but it's only 2 5/8 thick and it's very strong. I used all scrap wood to built this entire unit including the table. I had to hit a dumpster at a home building site for some scrap sheet stock to complete the table. LOL! T slots work fine with a 2 1/2" - or 2 5/8" table.
The pivot rod is 5/8" the table is 24" D X 26 3/4" W

Thanks Larry! Lifting my planer was a huge pain in the back. Now it has it's own parking space!
