Project Information

I needed a horizontal drill for making the Vintage sleighs The brass escutcheon pins that were used to hold the pieces together needed to be drilled into the middle of 1/4" wood and to not blow out the side. The pins are about 10 thousands bigger than a 1/16" drill bit. So I drill the hole and then put in the pin.

This type jig is used when making round Shaker Boxes to drill the holes very close to the edge and to allow the toothpick dowel to be put in.

It's 1/2" Baltic birch with a 1 7/8" hole that fits the collar on the drill body. I use stacks of wood and shims to get the drill bit to the correct height that I need to do the drilling. You then push the wood in to the required depth.

The block to hold the drill is glued and screwed. The block that holds it in the vise is also glued and screwed.

Great solution, Karson.

I admire the way you think "outside the box"

I see you've found use for plywood made overseas. Good creative solution.

Great jig, Karson. Simple and it works. I've still got my old ShopSmith but seldom use the horizontal drilling feature. I'm surprised there isn't one somewhere in that shop of yours. LOL

I agree with Mr. Angle. I would have though that you would have already owned one. :)

Well, it is not a thing of pure beauty, but it looks like you got it to work for you.

I think I detect some MDF and aluminum plate in there also. Good to use up the scrap.

Need to make the alumimum flashing a little bigger so I can attached it better and some bigger pieces of MDF so I can get the clamps out of the way. But it get it done. What more can you ask of a jig. If I use double faced tape it would change my height. But, then again It would be hard to remove for different heights.

Ah yes, MacGyver…The drill spins at 1000 rpm until the aluminum heats up from the electromagnetic force field of the drill bit sending a flair into the air at precisely the same moment a bad guy flies over Karson's workshop in a helicopter. Brilliant! It drills holes, too!
