Project Information

Earlier this week I spent two days with my 14 year old grandson Christopher building this bench. Actually, I just helped and hopefully taught him something, but he did all the work. It is actually a very challenging project as the tenons protrude through the top as well as the stretcher tenons fitting through the legs and finally wedge shaped tusks hold the entire piece together. The mortises have to be chiseled precisely and the stretcher has to be the exact length for the bench to be complete. The legs and all the mortises all angle at 9 degrees. All the work was done with hand tools utilizing hand planes and chisels. He did an excellent job and we both really worked hard and had fun.
The bench is finished in red milk paint under black milk paint and then sealed with tung oil.

Very interesting project. Hope that you and your grandson had a wonderful time building this project. What wood did you use for this project?

Wow, impressive work by your grandson and great mentoring by yourself. The result looks very professional. A useful and beautiful bench. No better way to bond with the grandkids. These sessions build lifelong memories and have very positive effects.
