Project Information

Just thought I would share my latest project and addition to my arsenal, a simple steam box.

this is made from junk (from the too good to throw away bucket) and 1/2 sheet of 3/4 ply wood.

There was some concern about the plywood de-laminating during the interaction with hot steam and water. Well I have used it for well over 20 hours on several days and there is no de-lamination present. I leave both doors open when I have finished the session, this allows the hot box to dry nicely by the next morning.

Nice job, Tony. Looks fairly hi-tech. If you can run that drain tube back into the boiler, it will extend your steaming time, with out a refill. I'm curious as to how long the plywood will hold up to the steam. I like using solid wood, although it will warp quite a bit. Let us know how it works. Thanks for the post.

Looks very well built. Is it finished on the inside? If not, won't it de-laminate?

Tenontim I thought about running the drain tube back into the boiler. But the can is pressurized when boiling, therefore the steam would push the steam back into box, via the out pipe. Plus I would get dirty water in the can.

Matt I have lost some weight since we last met.

Rikkor It is not finished inside, a very old article I read used ply wood, they stated it was not needed. However the glues used may have changed over the years and may become a problem. I will undertake this relatively small job with the steamer and reassess it.

But my feeling is when I have finished steaming for the day and I open both doors, the heat in the box will soon evaporate most of the moisture.

For those of you who cannot see the pictures. I know this happens on some PCs running VISTA, let me know and I will try to find the problem and fix it (feedback is appreciated) Please PM me with yous OS & Browser
