Project Information

During my career in the US Navy, I kept all my insignia (and there are lots of that) in zip lock bags, adrift in drawers, etc. Then, 12 years after I retired a friend suggested I design this box. It seemed a perfect match for the ShopBot Desktop CNC machine, and since then I've made around 20 boxes on commission. Seems to be a popular piece, and I only wish I had one of these when I was on active duty!

Naval Officer Insignia Box
Walnut with Brass Hardware
Lacquer Finish

12"W x 10"D x 3" H

The box contains two compartments to securely hold the various insignia and medals required of the uniform. The top is carved with the insignia of the officer's specialty, the inside lid is carved with the officer's name (and rank if desired) and branch of service, and the compartments are individually labeled for the various insignia devices. View options here.

Here's a video of making the box:

An extremely well thought out and beautifully crafted mementos box. Well done Andy. You might consider adding to the underside of the lid a list of duty stations - just a thought. Thanks for the eye candy.

Thanks Ron. Actually, I do make the effort to do some customization when the customer wants it, but I've found that the majority of boxes are ordered by parents for a newly commissioned officer … with no duty station history.

Yes, Max, I do get some retirement orders, and when I respond to an order (they are ordered right off my website) and send a rendering jpg, sometimes I'm asked to do something a bit different. If I can, I do. You only get to retire from the USN once, right?

The hinges are solid brass Brusso JB102 95 degree stop hinges for boxes. They are 1-1/4" long and 5/16" wide on a leaf. I get them at Lee Valley.

Just wondering how much you charge for these amazing boxes. My son is a Navy student aviator. He was looking for an insignia box and I am finding them hard to come by. Yours are gorgeous. Also, what is the turn around time?
