Project Information

I have not posted a project in awhile so I thought it was about time to put something up.

These bookcases are fairly routine but they do represent the final element in the all-weather room addition that we began in May of this year and completed on October 4th with the installation of the bookcases. When we added the room to the house we took out two exterior doors and my wife informed me that I was going to put some bookcases in their place since she needed more storage.

They are built with oak and oak plywood and have cherry accents. Where possible I try to find a way to include cherry in my projects. The finish is 5 coats of shellac. I decided on this finish due to the influence of Frank and David. I have generally used it as a sealer after staining but have never used it a finish coat before but it is always good to try something new.

By the way 20 minutes after the installation was complete my wife had the bookcases filled with books and "dust collectors" and she "commissioned" me to do another bookcase downstairs.

Thanks for looking.

Scott, These are very nice looking bookcases. you did a very good build on them, and your wife added further detail pieces which brings out the true beauty in them. Great Build .

Nice built in look, Scott. Looking at the photos closely, though, I think my wife could put more things in faster and closer together than your wife, hands down. We should start a thread on that in Coffee Lounge. Looks great. As always, bbqKing.

In all fairness the entire room, including the bookcases is really fine looking. Can't quite make out the printing..is that 'Man-of-War in the print?

I really appreciate all the comments.

Bbqking that is a picture of Citation. He won the '48 derby and went on to win the triple crown that year. Since this is the 60th anniversary of that event these prints have been issued and my wife simply couldn't pass it up. Normally this would Just be one more picture for me to hang and when we decide to paint it would be another nail hole to fill and another picture to re-hang again but since this is on a masonry wall I won't have to worry about re-hanging it when SHE decides to have ME re-paint the room.

Scott, I must have missed this when posted. These bookcases look great, and blend in well with the rest of the trim in your house.

Thanks for posting them.
