Project Information
This is a wedding gift for my buddy, inspired by a post I saw from GlassImpressions not too long ago (http://lumberjocks.com/projects/132513). This was my first time cutting coves on a table saw, and although slightly terrifying at first, its really not that bad. Other than lots of math, I'm not sure how to plan out the cove cuts, so I just did lots of guess-and-cut-and-check.
The miters are reinforced with biscuits, and it is suspended on the wall by a wire screwed into the back. The glass fits into a rabbet cut on each piece before assembly. I designed and cut out the vinyl myself, and actually applied it to the back to make cleaning the front a little easier. The finish is black spray paint, sanded off in spots to get the "vintage" look and then covered with several coats of shaker can Lacquer. Approximate dimensions are 18" tall and 38" long.
As with any project, I had a an "Aw-shucks" moment while working with the pane of glass. After applying the decal, I wanted to see what it looked like in the frame, and when I went to set it down the glass slipped out of my hand and shattered into lots and lots of tiny pieces. As you can imagine, lots of cursing ensued. the second go around went a little better, but I am still terrified to move it around and will be a lot less stressed when it finds its new home.
BTW- it was really hard to get good pictures due to all of the glare (see picture 5).
Thanks, for looking, questions/comments welcome!
