Kewald, I don`t know what causes it. I`ve never seen it in
pine. You mostly see it in maple and cherry. Maybe someone will tell us about it.

Amazing piece of wood. I think your use of it is spot on - simple design lets the wood do the talking.

I obtained the boards at a big box store.
Lowe`s had (2) 1×10 x 8`s
I was surprised because I had never seen any
before.
