Project Information

Just wanted to build a cyclone.
There's just something about gluing up all those wood strips that I find fascinating.
After building my doll house roofs with all those strips just had to try my hand at a cyclone.

Here's the project page.

I am impressed. You must have had a lot of fun making that. I was wondering if you had to do a lot of sanding on the inside in order to get a nice laminar flow of air as it whirls around the cyclone. Then I thought that it couldn't have taken too long since there are over 50 slats and the way you glued it up would have left it fairly smooth.

You can tell that I have spent some time analyzing this, but then I am an engineer, so I appreciate the effort that you put into this.

That is a really pretty dust collector. Well done indeed!

Super cool.
That's a real woodworkers cyclone.
Just bought a plastic one and feel almost bad now I see yours. ;-)
Best thoughts,

When I first started it up I had a whistle you wouldn't believe!!!
Had some air leakage at the bucket so needed a gasket to stop that.
With my 5 hp vac it seems to suck off the bottom of the 7 gal. bucket but I think a small baffle in the bucket could fix that.
May do some more testing.
What I did do is hook it up to my other cyclone I built using a Shop-Vac Bucket Max $21
from Lowes which is a much weaker vac 6.5 amps but a GOOD ONE
.
Now it sucks just fine and hardly any dust on the filter.

Please remember I'm building for a two car garage I don't need some monster vac.

The inside of the slats was 1/4" so not much trouble with smoothness.
I used 50 slats I think.
I kind a messed up 45 should have been close but as I was gluing it up I thought the bottom was going to be to small to get my hand in for sanding so added 5 extras that I had made as my safety's.
So I ended up with a couple a gaps inside not bad just something to fill in.
Ended up it was so smooth I didn't do much sanding.

From all my searching there are a lot of different types of cyclones or what ever you want to call them and they all seem to work to some degree.
My thought on the matter is, if a little dust is still getting out and it's bothering you stick the blow hose out side problem solved.

For $20 more bucks I could have bought one and still may, but just wanted to try building a wood one after seeing them on the net.
Also when I built my doll house it had a bunch a slat work and I really enjoyed that build.
This is my third cyclone.
My first was made cutting up three 5 gal buckets, and a Bucket Max housed in a cabinet so no noise, but man is it uglyyy!!!
My second was made with a safety cone.
I'm afraid I'm getting addicted to making cyclones. lol

Thanks all for your comments and encouragement.

More like nerves of steel.
Gluing up 50 slats on both sides before they dry and then putting it all together.

Can you say Get Ur Done!!!

OUTSTANDING ! If you like working with small wood strips, you may want to look into building a cedar strip canoe, kayak or row boat. I made a row boat a few years ago with plans from Newfound boatworks. One of the most fun woodworkig projects I've ever done.

I have been looking in to them but at 65 and having a fit with my back right now will have to stick to the small stuff for now.

Here it is all hooked up.
I run it in a cabinet on wheels it is so much quieter.
I also run it with my first ugly cyclone the old one hardly gets any dust now.

That sure looks better than an upside down traffic cone but you look too organized for me. Well done, I could only wish. I try but these new ideas keep rolling around in my head.

Bushmaster this is just a shot between builds.
Just look at my toy builds to see the mess, I need to use that cyclone more!!! lol
I made a traffic cone one and it worked but would suck in in something got in the pipe.
I just love to build stuff and the cyclone in wood caught my interest.

Just wanted to add that I've been using my wooden cyclone now for four and a half years and it's still going strong and getting the job done.
