Project Information

My son has never shown much intrest in my work, it has always seemed boring to him. What I am hoping is that he will see that he can make whatever he wants. He's a teenager now so I will have to wait and see if by combining his skateboarding and woodworking will get him interested.

I carved the deck out of Mango and then layed two layers of fiberglass to reinforce it.

I like it very much. As a matter of fact I would think that would be a big ticket ($$$) item to aging skateboarders who went out and got a real job.

That is a very interesting skateboard. I don't know much about them but I would think they's call it "Knarley" Excellent work. What does it say on the bottom?

I've got to say, that if you let him use this on the concrete, I ought to come slap you. This is truly a sculptural piece of functional-art. I really admire this work.

It deserves to be on a pedestal in a gallery, or made into trophies for the X Games. Just great work.

Looks great but I would be a little concerned with the points on the front of the board.

I thought for sure they said "You better not tear this up, or I will choke you"

Beautiful board. That better stay up on a shelf. He can ride the one he makes outta some birch ply!

Seriously, that is gorgeous

This is gorgeous. It sure beats the skateboard I used when I was his age (we only had 2×4 boards then). I cringe at the thought of this board being used for anything but show.

Thanks for the post.

that's awesome work. It is pretty difficult to get younger people interested in such an 'archaic' art or hobby. I'm 31 and I still have trouble getting my buddies fired up about it. The only tactic that's worked, among many others, is somehow getting them to make something themself. Even if it's super small and easy. My item is a simple spatula or stirring stick that looks like the nike check mark without the curl up towards the tip. After they're done, you toss em some beeswax and watch them turn from ambivalent into amazement that they actually made it. 20 minutes is all it takes usually. I've converted 3 friends over now. One would come over to get help working on his motorcycle. He made the stir stick, then instantly wanted to make a cutting board. He then took it upon himself to come out for about 5 weekends in a row and sift through pieces of walnut and maple, run em in the planer, rip em, glue, etc. Without the interactivity, I usually just get the 'aww, that's cute that you like to make things out of wood. It's good that you have a hobby..' . My conversion moment was just gluing a broken chair back together then painting it. Hopefully you can integrate this somehow into your strategy.
