Gorilla glue challenge entry

Made the chairs about 3 years ago.

Lumber is Tennessee swamp cyprus. It came from Whiteville saw mill located on highway 64 about 70 miles east of Memphis in the south part of the state. Highly figured cyprus. With lots of character.

Soon after making the chairs a seat slat broke near a particular knarly swirly grain pattern. Well it stayed like that for years, not really affecting the way the chair "sat".

Gorilla glue and screws, with quartersawn white oak straps are my repair methods.

Didn't want to replace the board, because of the beautiful silver and green patina the wood is getting.

After and before pictures included.

Thanks Dick, attached is the project I'm working on today. 8/17/2008 (my Bday heheheheheh) >grin<

It is a commission for two framed haunted forest landscape sets with a triptych for good measure.

Hi Dan;

Happy Birthday!

I agree it would be ashame to have a new board in the middle of that chair.

Good save.

As always, the new project you're working on is up to your normal level of perfection.

real potent 6 month oil vinegar steel wool in a jar dye mixture

I used a corner of a reg rag to sponge on the vinager wood acid on the sides and back. Fast way to get black.
Doesn't take much liquid to react with oak. Gets black almost immediately.

Photobucket

Thanks everyone !!

Guess what I'm doing on my birthday ? The Peggster is cookin' Corkey's BBQ ribs on the gas grill !!!

Forgot mention …. why jazzed up oil stain ? .... look at the time. Two hours flat in-front of a shop fan and then two coats of shellac.

That's some jazzed up finish.

Dan,
Stellar finish. But I personally think what makes this whole piece work is the book match on the stiles. If they didn't match that well then that spectacular finish would only have highlighted the mismatch. Nice work upfront to get to the finish.

Got my EAGLE router bits and coping sled today. Thanks Martin and Julie ! You too Gary and Charlie !

Thanks for the cool comments everyone !

As you can tell from my photography, I like layers of shaded finish …. and bookmatched quartersawn white oak. Shellac French polish is fun too. Tip …. the red cloth shop rags from Harbor Freight are good for about everything I've tried to use them for. Found that it makes good, consistent material for applying the shellac.

Figured I'd click on one of the Gorilla glue buttons and … well … then I started feeling guilty about not mentioning Gorilla glue enough in my post. Well …. thought this was cute. Cool prize.

The more I see the blue one , the more I like it. The electric blue glaze looks different in evey light. At night, with just the TV and a reading lamp it has a one-of-a-kind haunting feeling. Impossible to cature in a photograph.

great finishing process…. Did I read that correctly, that is a jar of vinegar with steel wool in it to get that black finish? That, then the shellac - great color, matches the desk I'm at perfectly!
