Project Information

This is my first attempt at a steamer trunks. The basic trunk came from a woodworker Journal downloadable plan. I used the plans as a guide but really modified them quite a bit. This box is 36×20 x 15. I used 1/2 inch red oak ply vice 1/4 inch called out in the plan. My banding is 1/4 inch red oak vice 3/4. I used 3/4×3/4 quarter round, glued and screwed to reinforce the corners. I followed the plans a lot closer for the lid. The curved lid rafters are mortise and tenon joined to the lid rails the horizontals are 3/4 red oak and the panels are 1/4 oak ply laid into grooves in the horizontals. This trunk is large and heavy, I'll be downsizing the next one to make it easier to handle.
My original thinking was to build three, one for each of our daughters. I'm now up to six as daughters in law and wife have been added to the list.

Looks nice!

I want to do something like this to go at foot of our bed although I'm thinking a flat top to double as place to sit down and put on shoes.

I have the magazine that came in. I've always wanted to make it. Looks like it came out really nice. From memory I think the original had a different handle on it?
