Project Information
This is a mobile base for my floor standing drill press. This is my last non-mobile piece of shop equipment to get outfitted with a mobile base. I used the same basic design I used on my jointer mobile base with some tweaks. I adjusted the geometry assoicated with the axel placement to give a lift of just a little over a quarter of an inch. My jointer design lifted up about an inch. That's really too much. This shorter lift yields much less resistance on the pedals. I also wanted to reduce the wood-wood friction present in the lift design. I thought about putting some plastic laminate down to address this. However, I took a simpler approach. I saturated both surfaces with cyanoacrylate. These seems to work just fine. The operation of depressing the pedals for lift is VERY smooth, compared to what I experience on the jointer version where wood is sliding against wood. I'll put some of the cyanoacrylate on the jointer pedals eventually. Given I'm not excercising these all that often I'm expecting this approach to last a while.
Now my last investment in this drill press will be a new table. I've noticed a number of these on LJ. I'm also partial to one I have in a Shop Notes from a few years back. I'll combine all the ideas I see and put something together.
You can find the complete Sketchup model for this mobile base here.
