Project Information

After I restored a few of my old saws and built my first backsaw, I needed a saw vice. Since no old and good ones showed up at ebay her in Germany, I decided to build my own. After a few searches at the net I came up with the idea to combine the design from Brit with the technic from Paul sellers for shaping a new blade. Like many others I had the problem to start the filing without sliping over the edge of the new blade.

The body is cut out of mdf and the jaw is made from oak. I changed the attachment to my workbench from Andys Workmate style to that oak attachment you see in the pictures. Now I can clamp it easily to my bench and it is stable enough that the vice dont swing at the filing. The knobs I turned and filed out of wallnut and fitted with treated inserts. A few coats of BLO and Shellac and they look nice.

The next step was to build the gauge for the toothing. I cut 2 stripes of beech at the same width like the oak jaws. Drilled holes through the jaws in the vice and the beech and screwed stock screws in the beech strips. Now i can fasten them to the top of the vice.

Open vice were you can see the fastening, nuts are missing!

Then i glued a 11 tpi paper pattern om them ( closed and screwed vice) and sawed the grooves in them. The grooves from the 2 strips are now exact parallel to each other. For a different tpi pattern I just make a pair of new strips and can screw them to the vice. I made the mistake to cut the grooves too deep, so a few broke, when i sawed the plate. They just need to be 1/16 or less to guid the small hack saw. If they dont break you can reuse them again and again.

The next step is to put the saw in the vice just a little bit under the surface of the strips and make 2 or 3 strokes with the hacksaw over the blade in each groove. Remove the stipes and you have small pits in your blade were you can start with the file without sliping over the blade.
