Veritas - Low Angle spokeshave (Rating: 2)

My son presented with me with a Veritas low angle spokeshave for Christmas. We were going to use it for shaping an oak axe handle we had cut out. I initially tested it on Christmas day using some pine and cherry scraps around the shop. Worked great on this fairly soft wood. However when we later tried to shape the oak handle the problems began. The blade is held in place by two bolt heads which contact side bevels on the blade. The instructions for the shave say you need to sand the back of the blade to better hold the blade in place - which we did. After adjusting the blade with the mouth we proceeded to shape the handle. The blade quickly skewed and then dropped out. After reinserting the blade we really tightened down the bolt thumb nuts and tried again - same results. We readjusted the blade over and over but it continued to come loose and drop to the floor. The problem is that the two bolt heads do not have enough contact with the blade's beveled sides when shaving really hard wood. I am very disappointed in the spokeshave especially after using other Veritas products which have always been outstanding.
