Project Information

I pulled this blank out of a group I purchased several years ago. I couldn't even tell for sure what it was until I got started turning it.

I have not done much lathe work lately, so I took the opportunity to use a few different tools just for practice. I have square and round carbide cutters that will pretty much take a whole project from start to finish, but I also got in some work with my conventional rougher and bowl gouge (which scares the heck out of me for some reason). I didn't have any disastrous catches, so I guess it was a good day. :)

Fun. I wish I could bring the mini indoors. Since it has always have the purpose of confounding things with J.R. Beale inventions for you to try: Treen Mandrels

Did you use the buffs on this one?

Nice one Charlie. Looks like a neat piece of wood too.

I agree with the bowl gouge - I just have an irrational fear of it. And the carbide cutters just make life so easy - hard to find a reason to use others.

I sure did, Doug. Wiped it down with Danish oil yesterday, and used the wax wheel on it today. I need to order some replacement wheels, though, for coarse and medium. I messed around and used them on metal, and now they are coated with black stuff that digs into wood pores with a vengeance!

By the way… you sure are good at spending my money. :)

That's really purty, Charlie. Love spalted wood.
Bowl gouges don't scare me. I can watch someone use one all day.

By the way, Doug, talking to you about it must have shaken loose a few stuck neurons. I pulled up Beall's instructions and saw that they recommend cleaning the wheels with coarse sandpaper. I ran out to the shop and gave it a try, and, sure enough, it worked like a charm. I was able to run the bowl through all three wheels, and greatly improved the sheen level in a matter of minutes.

Good looking bowl Charlie. You are right about the lathe, it's a tool that demands that you keep your skills honed in :)

Very pretty bowl! That QS grain in several pics is just fancy. Wonder why no one ever talks about QS Maple?

Maple is overlooked in general, Andy, as far as I'm concerned. It polishes up as well as anything.

I'm just curious why QS Maple isn't more in demand. It is a LOT prettier than flatsawn. To each his own I suppose.
