Nice job Brett. May I ask what oil you used?

I have used boiled linseed oil on walnut and it greatly darkens the wood.

Very nice. It's getting rare to see rifles with nice walnut like this. Lately, when I go into a gun shop, the guy behind the counter says "can I help you." I reply, "I'm a blue steel, walnut, fixed choke kind of guy, what do you have?"

The guy behind the counter pauses for a moment, and then says "have a nice day".

Thank you to everyone for the compliments! It is much appreciated. :)

bbrown-I am using Watco Danish oil. It is a bit of an experiment to see how well I can build the finish into the pores. I used cherry for the first coat to add some color (red) to it. Every coat after is natural (clear). Not sure if I will get the results that I desire but it will be fun to see. It made the wood a lot darker than when it was dry. It is a little darker than I had hoped but not too dark… at least not yet. It may darken over time. I am not sure what oil is in the Danish oils.

Hillbilly-It is a tack driver! It's an airgun. It shoots .22 cal pellets. It's not tuned for power but for accuracy. This is a great rifle for small game out to about 50 yards. I shoot steel/reactive targets with it in my backyard, no hunting with this one yet.

Thanks for the info Brett. One way to fill the pores in walnut using oil is to apply the oil and than use 400 grit to make a slurry as you rub it into the pores. I got this idea from the really accomplished woodworker, Glen Huey. If you can get a chance, post a photo when you're done.
