Project Information

Cherry and curly maple. I made it so it would fit through the planer. Then two very shallow passes with the trim router. I had the first coat of mineral oil on it when a buddy posted his first board and almost shamed me into taking it back to the shop to cut some finger 'dents' into the ends. I decided to stand by the 'baby steps' mantra and finish finishing it. 3 coats of mineral oil and 2 or 3 coats of Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner.
12" x 17" x 3/4". The one questionable thing I did on this was turned the maple sideways so that the edge grain is showing (curl is more defined) and the face grain is glued to the edge grain of the cherry. I hope 3/4" is too thin to be concerned about wood movement…right?
Thanks for looking. Any comments, suggestions are appreciated.
By the way, the cherry is some trim that LJ gfadvm gave to hubby and me when he was making room for lumber to be milled on his saw mill. Thanks, Andy!

Great work Candy! Don't worry about the face and edge grain, there won't be that much difference in expansion and it adds definition to the curl.

That's a beauty! You've got me inspired. I was at the wood store yesterday but didn't know what to get and it seemed to be a waste to get pretty wood for a cutting board. I was wrong!

Nice cutting board. I'm making my first one right now. Cherry and maple also. It's not as easy as I thought it might be. So don't sell yourself short :)

Thanks, Chris. I think I got the letter/number stamps from Lee Valley.
Gary, this one went to Mom for Christmas.
Thanks, Monte. I try not to.
Thank you, Roger and Dave.
Nayo, that is a good idea. I like the simple basket that Chris Pine made in this video along those same lines.
Thank you, Dr. Ken. Looking forward to seeing your posts.
Thanks, Grizz. A very small dent ;-)
Yes, they are, Marty!
Dallas, thanks! I didn't think it would be an issue. It's reassuring to hear you say so.
Thank you, David. In time for this Christmas, even!
Thank you, Randy. It was your beautiful board and all of it's great details that had me dithering.
Wow, Doe, I'm humbled. Looking forward to see your pretty wood board.
Thanks, Steve.
Terry, I find that hard to conceive! Oh, and is there any aspect of woodworking that is not addictive!?
Thank you, Marty S. I am happy with the way it turned out.
Appreciate the encouragement, Scott.
Thank you Mr. Chairman, Jeff! Your reassurance is greatly … um … reassuring!
