Project Information

Cherry and curly maple. I made it so it would fit through the planer. Then two very shallow passes with the trim router. I had the first coat of mineral oil on it when a buddy posted his first board and almost shamed me into taking it back to the shop to cut some finger 'dents' into the ends. I decided to stand by the 'baby steps' mantra and finish finishing it. 3 coats of mineral oil and 2 or 3 coats of Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner.
12" x 17" x 3/4". The one questionable thing I did on this was turned the maple sideways so that the edge grain is showing (curl is more defined) and the face grain is glued to the edge grain of the cherry. I hope 3/4" is too thin to be concerned about wood movement…right?
Thanks for looking. Any comments, suggestions are appreciated.
By the way, the cherry is some trim that LJ gfadvm gave to hubby and me when he was making room for lumber to be milled on his saw mill. Thanks, Andy!

First board, huh? Looks pretty good to me. And, I don't think that board needs a comma.

Very nice Candy. I made one last week with the finger hold and messed it up a bit and had to make the finger hold all the way along each end so they would match.

Thank you, Sheila and John!
NO Planer for end grain boards here, Dean!! I do not want to become One with the wood(or tools) THAT way!
Thank you, Mustang. I agree, this board is just fine, being comma free. Hey, maybe I could market that…'comma free cutting board'...hmmm
Bill, that was my concern, messing it up and not having time to do another.

For a woman who had never been in the shop until less than a year and a half ago she picked up on how to in a hurry. She does spend most of her free time watching woodworking videos learning how it is done. And she never hesitates to ask questions or tell me how I am supposed to do it. Her new name is BOB; Bossy Old B(?)road. Now I just need to build her a shop of her own so I can use some of my equiptment occasionaly. She has 2 work tables of her own, but guess whos table she is always taking the lions share of for her projects. Red hair will not grow on a thin skull, so I just work on something else and don't even engage in a losing battle with her. Gotta love em.

You need a hyphen between "comma" and "free" because you're using the words as a compound modifier.
It's confusing because I don't know if you're talking a about a free cutting board or freeing the cutting board.

comma-free cutting board

Ain't this fun? :)

Well, technically, the cutting board is an inanimate object, possessing no free will, therefore one cannot "free" something that is not being held against its will.

Your other point is well taken, however. If the cutting board is free of commas, then the modifier should have been hyphenated.

As I have never seen a cutting board with a comma, attached or not, the issue with the comma is really moot. However, this episode has been a valuable lesson in what can happen when our grammar breaks down….......!

There is a saying in german (loch an loch und hält doch ) which means hole on hole and holds together what is it ?
It's a chain or net so your boards held together with glue should certainly stay together .
Nice board and no question mark either .

Happy New Year

Thanks, Mike. If I look like I'm ahead it's only because I'm so far behind!
