Project Information

Cherry and curly maple. I made it so it would fit through the planer. Then two very shallow passes with the trim router. I had the first coat of mineral oil on it when a buddy posted his first board and almost shamed me into taking it back to the shop to cut some finger 'dents' into the ends. I decided to stand by the 'baby steps' mantra and finish finishing it. 3 coats of mineral oil and 2 or 3 coats of Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner.
12" x 17" x 3/4". The one questionable thing I did on this was turned the maple sideways so that the edge grain is showing (curl is more defined) and the face grain is glued to the edge grain of the cherry. I hope 3/4" is too thin to be concerned about wood movement…right?
Thanks for looking. Any comments, suggestions are appreciated.
By the way, the cherry is some trim that LJ gfadvm gave to hubby and me when he was making room for lumber to be milled on his saw mill. Thanks, Andy!

Very nice Candy. Excellent choice on woods. Two of my favorites together.

You will be making them by the stack before long.

As has already been said…....they are addictive.

Very nice Candy… You did GOOD!

I have made cutting boards only ONCE! LOL

I had some thin 1/2" strips left over from making some Molding Strips… and I thought "Maybe these would make a good little Cutting Board"... I made two of them… 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" x 3/8" ... strips of Maple & Walnut alternating…
I just quickly cut & glued them to get rid of the Left Overs… Cut to final dims. & rounded-over the edges.

Used Mineral Oil on them… Still give them Mineral Oil once in awhile (6 mo - yr)...

They ended up to be our Favorite cutting boards to use! Nice & small & easy to clean… I go to them First for most jobs… Larger ones only when I'm going to be cutting a LOT of something (which doesn't happen very often - Just for two people).

So, if you ever small amounts of scraps left-over, just remember, you can make a Smaller cutting board! LOL

You did great! Thank you for sharing!

Happy New Year!

Couldn't of done it without you and all the great LJer's here, Dallas.
Eddie, this 12 step program you speak of is to quit? Nobody wants to be a quitter! I do like meetings though. Will there be donuts?

Yesterday, Buster? I think not! I remember that beautiful board you posted in March…the one that didn't become an end grain board? Have you found the ugly wood to do that with, yet?

Nice work, Candy! This is a great board, and your next one will be better!

Pretty soon, you'll be making all kinds of boards, including endgrain ones. Just remember, endgrain boards DO NOT go through the planer-that is unless you want to be a patient at your own hospital….......!
