Project Information

I was hired to build this rack for a birthday present, It was my first belt buckle rack. I built it to mount using a french cleat. Not real happy with the finish, every time I use lacquer for finish lately, I think it turns out bad and you can see little runs here and there. Th wife said it looks great and that I am to much of a perfectionist lol.

That looks great buddy, love the cut log slabs on the side. Def adds to the character of the piece. Have you tried tung oil with some poly as a top coat on cedar? The tung oil really makes it pop. Great job buddy. My wife will be wanting one of these for some of her stuff to display. LOL

Nice build!

If you are going to be doing a fair amount of finishing with lacquer or even shellac, I would recommend picking up a decent HVLP spray gun - they make finishing SO much nicer!

Even spray, no drips and really easy cleanup!

Cheers!

Nice rack, Todd! Seems like I said that a lot lately. Good thing it is not to a lady LJ!!

Do you have more problems with lacquer in the cold weather. I find that problems when spraying in the shop when it is cooler like now. Usually I spray just outside the shop door in warm weather.
Runs are easy to get out of lacquer. I usually let it dry for 8 hrs, then carefully scrape off the top of the run with the side of a knife and set sand with 320 and reshoot it. The lacquer will bite right in to that dry finish

You must have a heck-of-a belt buckle collection. They'll look very nice displayed on this fine rack.

Nice job. I assume it is for a rodeo'er? I would love to see pictures of it loaded with his buckles…
