Project Information

Hi LJ's!

I want to share with you one of the most complex projects I've made in the past year. This October I've married my wife. For the wedding cake we planned to offer to our guests a long swiss roll (about 5 feet long). So we needed a tray that fitted to our propose. So I came with the idea to make a wooden tray with a nice piece of wood, and she accepted ;D.

The Bubinga is quite hard and strong spices, widely used decorative purposes, used to for music instruments, its resistant to wood parasites and fungi, and also suitable as a food-safe wood. So, after picking up in the lumber store a 5.5ft bubinga rough board, I first needed to true up all 6 faces before I start shaping and adding the details. I've the handicap of no having an electric jointer or planer; so I've spend a lot of time planing down one of the faces by hand this hard wood.
If you like the project I invite you to watch the following video where I show you step-by-step all the creation proces, from a rough timber to get the finished tray. Hope you like it.

Thanks for watching and for the comments.

Regards.

Very cool. Bubinga is a great looking choice. I didn't know it was a good food safe wood though…I'll have to keep that in mind!

At least is what the lumber shop boss told me (about 70 yo, and all his life selling tropical wood). I think it's pretty reliable.

Loved to see the wood come alive with the application of the mineral oil! The ink transfer may be just what I was looking for on a current project. How durable is it on a food use item, ww? Is there a particular type of ink used, food safe? Do you have a picture with the swiss roll on the tray? Thank you for sharing and welcome to Lumberjocks!

I guess if you don't treat badly the surface it will last long. I ignore if exist a food safe ink. I normally use plotter ink. We don't have a concern about the safe of the ink due of the small amount of it on the tray. Besides, the ink are in the margins of the tray so don't contact with the food. Evenly, I don't think that a small amount of ink would be toxic.

Hehehe, the ruler was made by a friend of my wife and was a surprise for us (he said he bring "something for the cake"). It's made from foam and wood veneer. Measurements aren't at scale.
