Project Information

I made one beer mug. No plans. just making it up as I went along. Now, I have people asking for them.

The problem became what to do with the piece cut out of the center? Us Yankees hate wasting materials.

Some great idea's Chris. Welcome to LJ's. I really like the chip and dip boat…can you explain a bit more how you made that one?

Nothing special.
1. After gluing up a stack of pine boards, I think it was 4, I just drew out the the boat outline (top looking down).
2. Like any bandsaw box, I cut the bottom off first.
3. Then cut the shape out with the bandsaw table angled over. I don't remember the angle. I just ball parked it. I cut one side top up then the other top down.
4. Then I cut off the transom (Back of the boat).
5. I could then cut out the inside.
6. Once the inside is cut out, I glued the transom back on.
7. Lots and lots of sanding.
8. When happywith the sanding, I cut out the bottom and glued it back on.
9. Again lots of sanding.
10. The seat for the dip bowls were a last minute idea.
11. I finished it with about 6 coats of General Finishes salad bowl finish. and we're ready to snack.

The fun part is she actually floats and is stable in the water.

I discovered this when doing the dishes one night. I couldn't resist trying. So I filled the sink and shoved off.

Great job.

Nice to see a creative use for the mug cut-outs.

I really like the boat - that would be great for a pool party, or a great gift for anyone with cabin by the lake (or ocean).

Thanks for the inspiration.

This are nice, what kind of finish are you putting on the inside of the drinking mugs? I had made several beer mugs and lined them with epoxy but with all the liability and worry issues, I decided to stop making them.

You'd be safer not to use an epoxy. I don't think they are food safe.

I've been finishing my cup with General Finishes Salad Bowl finish. I do about 6 to 8 coats. It works best for beer and other cold drinks. They recommend that you don't use hot liquids in it. That makes sense. I've been drinking out of my original cup for about a year now. I've had no problems at all.
