Let me briefly give you a reminder. You can't hear this enough.

This afternoon, a careless slip and the band saw laid open the knuckle of my right index finger. Y'all know how important this finger is. It's my pointing finger, my casting finger (spinning tackle), my trigger finger and the booger reamer. Good thing I had some super glue handy in my shop.

I forgot to remember that when you have used a machine for 30 years it can still bite you if you get too complacient. You have to be alert and concentrate the whole time you are using it. I had just installed a new blade and it was so sharp it went through a piece of antler faster than I thought and caught my pushing finger. Stupid on my part and wholely my fault. But where would woodworking be if not for a frequent "blue word". I wonder if the most famous woodworker, Jesus ever had to express his contempt for one of his hand tools this way?

Well, I still have a chance to retire from woodworking with most or all of my 10 digits. So this is just a reminder for the rest of y'all.

believe it or not, but just yesterday I nearly cut off my left thumb. A strange sound and seconds later an unbelieving look at a 3mm large gap in my thumb - scarily not hurting at all.

Then at the hospital talk was about amputating the cap, but luckily it seems to turn out fine after just some stiitches and an hour of surgery. I have no photos, but imagine a 3mm cut through the middle of the nail diagonally to the other side and loads of blood and you have it.

Just like maybe you, almost 30 years seemed to make me overly confident or maybe even invulnerable. I have also been thinking about a follow-up post to this accident and maybe suggesting the one or the other jig or push stick. I will definitely give this matter serious thought.

So, take care everybody and always be alert when turning on any machine.

On the brighter side I was just about to post some photos of the mallets I made during the unsuspecting hours before :)

a couple years ago I got careless - fortunately a guy down the street cut off his shoe lace and we made a tourniquet to hold back the flow.

Dang it…...it seems we're always on the losing end with these accidents, aren't we? Posted earlier (won't reshare here) on how I lost a battle with my tablesaw and almost lost part of my right thumb. Not fun.

Heal quickly, my friend.

I'm sure glad that it wasn't any worse and I hope that it will heal up fast. It's probably a great lesson. It could prevent an injury far worse.

Jeez, there should be a warning at the top of these type of posts…

Hope your injury heals up fast!

Years ago I had a job in a puzzle factory. Making pre-school puzzles and building blocks. Loved it as I ran band saws, radial and table saws for eight hours a day. The place was called Educational design. One evening I was cruising along cutting the alphabet worm puzzles on the band saw. That's when I felt the band saw blade hit the center of my middle finger on my left hand. Split the tip. I recovered but walked away with a new respect for power cutting tools. That was about 40 years ago and I still have close calls.

Oldwrangler, hope you heal quickly and everything works out alright. Take care brother.

I just had an injury on the band saw as well about a month ago. I was cutting some maple close to the edge and the blade sprung out at my thumb.

Can't post a pic from my phone but it wasn't all that bad but I did cut very deep
The left side of the tip of my thumb is completely numb I most likely hit somthing.

Somthing funny and still can't figure out, their is blood all over the ceiling but nowhere else.
