Project Information
Where to being on this project. The saga started this summer when I came home from school and had some time for the summer so I wanted to work on a project. I have access to a small woodshop in the area and I set out to try to find something to make. I started browsing LJ's projects to get some ideas and I saw a guitar stand posted by Ken Dixon a while back and I wanted to work on emulating it. I figured that something like that would make a perfect gift for my girlfriends birthday (August 21st) so I got to work.
I've documented this project pretty much the entire way and some of the progress is in my blog posts here on LJ's. This has been such an awesome project through and through and I can't wait to get to try another bent project in the future. This project had 4 bench pieces of wood, include the base in order to match the guitar shape. The only problem was that I didn't have the guitar in order to hold it along side and match things up!
I was able to get some measurements from her family and confirm that the guitar was in fact the right size and everything would match up. I made the shape for the based by taking a picture of a classical guitar scale dimension and printed it out in order to try to match up the base shape. I added the spacers so that guitars with straps or knobs at the bottom can still sit comfortably. The contact areas for the guitar have all had leather added and cemented down.
The bends are laminate bents of 3 or 4 layers, with the thicknesses varying depending on the component. This was all from one board of really curly maple, and it is definitely some beautiful wood. I had such a great time making this and I can't wait to give this to my girlfriend for her birthday. If anyone has any questions or more pictures just let me know!
UPDATE:
Well the project is finally done! I gave it to her yesterday for her birthday and she really loved it. The guitar fits pretty nicely in the stand, it could fit a little better at the base but she has a pretty small classical guitar so hopefully that stand will be able to hold a wide variety of bigger guitars down the road and have multiple purposes and not just fit this one guitar.
