Project Information

Those of you who may have seen my recent review of my two week stint at the American School of French Marquetry are probably not surprised that my next project would be a chevalet of my own.

It's made of cherry, because that's what I had a lot of, with a saw bow of oak. I purchased one of Patrick Edward's fine hardware kits which include a full scale set of plans. I'm not used to making boxes from plans, but having a set certainly made this project go easier and quicker.

The chevalet, of course, is the key tool to creating marquetry in the French method. As Paul Miller (shipwright) and others have covered the function and construction of the chevalet in considerable detail, I won't repeat that information here.

My interest in marquetry is primarily to "up my game" a bit with my boxes, and my decision to spend some time with Patrick Edwards and Patrice LeJeune exceeded my expectations. Now to do the final adjustments and blade alignment, and I'm off and running.

Thanks for looking in,

Roger

Looks just excellent Roger …......... but I would have expected no less, of course.

I'm pretty sure your considerable "game" will be upped substantially.
Now no one will be able to keep up to you. :)

Welcome to the chevy family.

Fantastic, Roger - as someone else said above, everyone will be playing catchup from now on, including me! More power to your elbow … does it need a levy?

I look forward to seeing the first work you produce with it - I'm sure it will be exquisite!

She's a beaut, Roger.
I looks like an extra-sturdy piece of fine furniture. You may have the nicest one in the country. I am impressed and look forward to seeing where this leads.

Roger, that is an excellent looking chevalet and I am sure that it will serve you well for years to come. As others have already said, your skills are already starting from a high base so there is no limit to where your journey will take you from here. I'm also thrilled that you an ASFM alumni and I look forward to seeing how apply the French method in your future projects.

Welcome to the family!

Fine job on the chevalet Roger. The cherry will make it a long lasting beauty and will only get better with age.
A gorgeous made tool that I'm sure will create some wonderful marquetry.

Thanks everyone. The kind words are encouraging. There is no room for it in my little shop for the chevalet, so it now rests in the office over the shop. This works out fine, as it generates very little sawdust or other mess, and the track lighting over the whiteboard provides ample light. I have it sitting on a cheap piece of white shower board to control the dust and make it easier to see any little pieces that escape the packet!

A pleasant, bright place to cut, and the shop is right below. Don't expect too much; there are marqueteurs here on LJ that are much, much more experienced than I. I'm just a novice at marquetry.

Very nicely done, Roger and you've found an ideal location without taking up shop real estate. Like everyone else, I am eager to see your creative and masterful touch applied to marquetry in boxes. This will certainly kick things up a notch.
