Project Information

This box starts off with a glue up block made up of Alder, the wrapped with Mesquite, I used Wenge for the splines, drawer pulls and top tray, it has all of my special features hidden drawer and the hidden compartment behind a false bottom door, this mesquite used in this project is part of some mesquite I had gotten from a neighboring farm land, it was already dead and dried when I milled it on my bandsaw, this box measures 11 3/4" x 6" x 7 1/4" has two large drawers, a small lift out tray that acts as a key to open the top false bottom door that lies under the top wenge tray and a hidden drawer, it is finished in a single coat of tung oil, the edge grain of the drawers and all other edge grain I added a single coat of non waxes shellac and then two coats of my own mix satin wipe-on-poly and a final rub down with paste wax.

A little tid bit about this build, when I was cutting the splines, I forgot to check both front corners where the cuts would land and if you notice on the small drawer top right corner, I managed to fix that minor detail with gluing the spline on the top edge of the drawer.

Thanks for looking

I love it. Practical and good looking too. I haven't built something like this (not sure of the construction methods) but I think I'll try one. Great job Blackie!

If I saw a box like this in a fine men's store I would immediate think of you Randy! Another great looking box here!
I would only make one adjustment to the "change" compartment. I would make it so I could scoop the change out like your would in a cash register. Other than that It's perfect! Nice work!

Tthanks everyone,

Andy, yes love the smell of Mesquite another favorite of mine is Spanish cedar.

Tony, the inside edges of the coin tray are rounded so you can actually finger scoop or you can just dump the co is out.

Love the box (as always) and I like the blog idea, too- I've been wanting to make something with hidden drawers, but haven't had the time to try and figure out how.

you should patent this idea and start mass production!

Another beautiful looking Valet Randy, you sure have these all worked out. I imagine they are a lot quicker to make now than when you first stated making them. Keep up the great work and products.
