Project Information

My wife is an excellent cook, and she cooks a lot. So we need to store a lot of food. We used to have two ugly plastic cabinets in the garage for that specific purpose. So I didn't think long before deciding that this would be my second woodworking project. I made a plan, and a few weeks later this is what came out.

More pictures here.

Special thanks to these lumberjocks user for their advices.

Like the latch… excellent.
Don't like the pocket hole screws for assembly , but that's my pref.. I prefer dadoes.. But hey.. that's your call.

Good design, keeping the bottles low.. if you drop them , they don't have far to go.

I agree dadoes are better in almost every way, but that's only my second project, and I didn't feel confident enough to use them already. Pocket holes are good if you want to work fast.

This being a cabinet and not "furniture" there is nothing wrong with pocket hole joinery. However, in this case, the ends and the center divider could have been screwed through the top and bottom and then you wouldn't see the pocket holes at all.
It's a great cabinet and with more experience will come a more refined way to do it.

Pocket holes are not really visible anymore, I filled them with plugs and it's almost invisible now.

It's human nature to rebel against change. Many old wood workers still think the only to make anything is in the old style, be it mortise and tennon or dowels, or dado's.
Well welcome to the 21st century, we now have biscuits and pocket hole joinery, as well as glues that the old timers only dreamed of.

I disagree with Earlextech's statement in the above post.
In todays modern woodworking, any joint that is strong and square is indeed proper for furniture and cabinetry.

That being said, if a piece is a Stickley replica, I would not choose pocket holes, I would choose the joinery that old Gustov Stickley himself used.

Looks to me like BenoitM did a right fine job on this pantry and I'll bet his wife gave him more hugs than you got.

Only time will tell us if the engineering of the wood, joinery, and hinges and such will stand up to the test.

Nice work, hey I use pocket holes whenever I can! Those small cubby holes look like it means A LOT of wine storage!

Made it a favorite.

Grumpymike - I don't know why you disagree with me. I agree with you. Maybe I should have been more specific and said Stickley instead of just furniture.

That's really nice.

As a noob I have a hard time accepting pocket-hole joinery. I've got this awful "idea tumor" in my head that it's not "real" that I'm dying to get over. It's got to work. If they had pocket hole jigs 200 years ago you can bet your arse they'd have used them. I hate having that kind of purist prejudice kicking around in my skull.

That's a nice piece and yeah, that clasp is excellent.

Nicely done.

I agree that using pocket holes feels like cheating :)
But the end result is really good, and it's strong.

heh. I gotta just get over it. The results are too good. Maybe I'll just force myself to go and buy the new Kreg and get used to using it.

That's a really nice build! I agree that there is nothing wrong with using pocket hole screws. Properly placed and sized they make terrific joints that usually aren't ever seen.

BenoitM,

Now that the cabinet is full I see that the top shelf was designed to fit the tall appliances and canisters as the door shelves are designed for a specific purpose. Well planned and thought out … Again congrats on a great project.
