Cedar off cut fun

I was given this chunk of wood by degoose, I was not sure what it was so I decided to have some fun with it today.

Its a roughie chuck out so there was nothing to lose playing about and having some fun with it.

First up I arborteched the surface to determine what species it was. ...its a cedar genus, so its worth continuing,

I wanted to get it reasonably parallel to see if it could be used for something.

I set it up in my vice and set to work with my sabre saw cutting it to a consistent thickness.

I forgot to take a before shot hence why the clamp is there, but you will get the general dimensions at the start.

This is the biggest side

Wood Natural material Trunk Plant Tree

The side view showing the wedge cut
Road surface Wood Asphalt Brick Brickwork

This is the smallest side
Wood Sculpture Art Gas Metal

I then arborteced the biggest piece.

Side 1
Wood Cuisine Trunk Ingredient Polyporales

Side 2
Wood Artifact Trunk Hat Natural material

Then it was the inspection of the obvious crack, it looked like it could be repaired so I mixed up some glue and sawdust opened the split with a screwdriver and filled the opening in with the mix

Side 1
Table Bottle Tableware Wood Plastic bottle

Side 2
Wood Bumper Wood stain Asphalt Grass

Put a clamp on and it pulled up OK so I left it to dry overnight
To be continued

The tools used.
Pneumatic tool Drill Handheld power drill Hammer drill Wood

1 x Angle grinder fitted with an arbortec planner
1 x sabre saw fitted with a long wood cutting blade
1 x Titebond III
1 x clamp
1 x Portable vice
1x Plastic Crate
Cannot do much with the off cut wedge so it will eventually go in the bin, but not before I finish the project
I have been caught before hucking bits out prematurely !!!

So what am I going to do with it! .....possibly a cheese dip and biscuit serving platter, no really sure just yet.

Great tool the arbortec planner by my goodness it makes a mess!!

Stay tuned for the jointing and thicknessing phase, and then a decision for its use will be made.

You just KNOW this is going to be something really nice when done - it's just the "getting there" that can be the challenge AND the fun.

Thicknessing and surfacing (the alternate method)

Got real keen this morning and took the cedar out of the clamp and was going to set to work thicknessing.

Set up the thicknesser and was about to get going.

Tire Automotive tire Vehicle Plant Motor vehicle

Oh no its too big, and I was not cutting 30mm or so off the side, so I decided to use my drum sander.

Set up with 36 Grit and made a few passes, (read as about 20x)

Food Wood Cuisine Dish Natural material

It was taking forever,

Wood Trunk Artifact Cuisine Sculpture

So I set up a chalk line to determine how much needed to come off and set to work with the arbortec planner again.

Cuisine Ingredient Soil Dish Baked goods

Now alternating between the 36 Grit and planner I got down to an acceptable level.

The A side at 36g
Handwriting Plant Wood Font Tree

The B side at 36G
Brown Handwriting Plant Wood Tints and shades

Then down to 60g and finished up at 80G
Head Eye Wood Human body Tree

Then onto the belt linisher to finish the edge off,
Hair Head Eye Human body Jaw

I ran the rule across it just to convince myself it was still to big for the thicknesser, sure enough it was pew what a relief.

I had to stop and clean up,.... cedar dust and Arbortec chips everywhere !!

Lotta fun and as the glued in section seemed to hold OK I will set to filling all the cracks next.

Good thing it wouldn't fit in the Ryobi thickness planer. You would have almost certainly had a problem planning the endgrain cookie, it would have probably broke up into chunks and/or had terrible tearout. Overall it would have been quite dangerous.

Be Careful!

Thanks Mike,

Not sure what planet I was on that day I didn't even think to use my "Mango stump rescue sled" I put together for doing the same job.

Yes you are right its the away to go.
