Project Information

I call it my franken-clamp-rack!

This beauty was built using scrap wood in the shop. It has 23/32" pine plywood on the back, the supports on the side are 3/4" birch plywood and the top and bottom shelves are 2×6 SPF lumber.

A masterpiece built in an hour and a half and serves a very useful purpose as I was tired of piling my pipe clamps up in the corner of the shop.

I built capacity for more pipe clamps, but the extra space is good for my other clamps for now.

Comments welcome, especially if you are mesmerized by the intricacy and complexity of this piece of shop furniture ;-)

Oh, forgot to mention…. I used screws. No "fancy-mans" joinery for my project. You can have your half-blind dove tails and your locking rabbets :p

Randy, the only brilliant thing about it is that I didnt check to see if I had enough pieces at the correct length before I began. Luckily I did :)

I built it piece-by-piece as I picked through my scrap cut-off bins.

That's…that's phenomenal! It must be incredibly difficult to keep a vision of something that complex in your head, then bring it to fruition like that. I now realize how far I have to go in my journey. My hat's off to you.

It was tough. It just sort of came out of my head. Very organic.

Someday I'll have to write a book on my style of design.

I'm in awe. Simply in awe. A new school of design is born - The Matt School. Can't wait to read the book that unlocks the complex mysteries of the Matt Method.

By the way…. the 2×4 that you see nailed (yes I said nailed) to the wall of my shop is not part of the design, but I think it does add to the overall shabby-woodshop theme.

I agree with dawsonbob, an absolutely intricate stunning design, executed to perfection.

Puts my clamp holder to shame.

Thanks for showing,
Bob.

The book will be titled "My Way: A man, some scrap plywood, a box of screws, and nothing better to do on a Sunday afternoon"

Yes, yes, I can see it now. The nailing does add a certain je ne sais quoi to the project. Brilliance, shear brilliance. Who would have ever thought of using nails? Yet, yet…

It is always a good feeling to organize our highly regarded clamp collections! I built one somewhat similar to Yours, minus the top. Although I have not experienced any problems with our choice in design I do worry about the potential of the notch outs cracking or breaking due to grain direction of the 2x material weakened by the cut out ! Just a friendly heads up but most likely will stand the test of time and will serve You well ! Nice work.

Bob, my designs are so brilliant that they have features that I didnt bother to even design into the plan. They just happened. For instance, I did not plan for my bar clamps to fit so nicely on the unused portion of the rack.

When you are on your game, your designs have designs of their own! I cant explain it. It just works.

And the shelf above for storing cans! Well, what can we say about that. You must be exhausted, Matt.

Rob, that does worry me as well. I will be careful pulling the clamps on and off since a pipe clamp is nothing more than a huge lever. It wouldn't take much side to side motion to crack one of those fingers.

Bob, all I am missing is a neon beer sign flashing above it, and it would reach the pinnacle of perfection!

Rob, is that a real penguin in your avatar? What the story behind that?

Jim, thanks for the compliment. The only finish on this piece is the sweat from my brow. That's one-of-a-kind.

how you did this without a computer controlled laser cutter is just hard to believe! :)
