Project Information

A quick project. My wife asked for a mason jar chandelier to hang above the new dining table. I took some left over alder and made the hollow box. The mason jars were located in the barn of one of my nurse's. It's harder to find new jars with raised designs on the glass. The jars are hung from extension cord and the wiring is done inside two receptacles in the box. I needed a final touch to hide the nipple the box is hung from. Luckily a piece of the old chandelier worked well (it's not pictured). Overall a pretty easy project.

Thanks LJackson. I'm probably more of a photographer who does woodworking than a woodworker who does photography.

Great project. I've been wanting to build a similar one but I'm no electrician so I don't know how to wire it all together. Any tips?

Don't burn the house down. Tip #1. :) I brought the wires together inside a junction box in groups of four and then used a pigtail from those two groups to wire to the can in the ceiling. It's pretty basic. You just want to make sure things are snug and protected.

Looks awesome! Any chance you have a shot of the wiring inside? I REALLY want to make one of these…but have zero knowledge of running wires - I've hung ceiling fans and lights and such, but those are all pre-wired.

What size wire did you use?

Any guidance is appreciated :)

just read your comment above…now I feel like a dummy :)

My "what size wire" question is still valid though

What about heat build up in the mason jar itself, could cause problems with the socket and wire… I do like the way it looks.

I'm watching that too Max. They are 40 watt bulbs and I left it on for an hour which made the jars warm but easily touchable. I'll probably leave it on for a few hours next. If you see DIY videos for this they will drill/punch holes in the lids for ventilation. I don't have any yet other than the hole/gasket for the wire.

Or, just use LED and there's virtually NO heat. Nice job on the chandelier!
