Project Information

Simple platform twin bed for teenage neighbor. Made from 3/4 plywood and MDF with poplar strips on exposed plywood edges. Drawers roll directly on the floor and are guided in the bed by small nylon rub guides. Drawers stay closed with magnets on drawer backs. High friction tape added to bed bottom so bed doesn't slide on the hardwood floor when the client sits up in bed and leans against the wall.

Very nice work. Finish looks great. The detail of how you keep the bed from moving and the drawers closed are a very clever idea, and the way the drawers open and are guided. Impressive work. Keep sharing!!

Well done. You answered all my questions: the wheels on the drawers, the frictions tape and the mattress issue. I just purchase the 2×4's etc., to start on a frame today

I didn't use any 2×4s. Just 3/4 ply on sides top and back as well as for two dividers between drawers. All glued and screwed where they touched … plenty strong. Used MDF for drawer fronts since it is easier to shape the edges than plywood and doesn't need to bare any weight.

awesome bed! I like the ideas, but have a thought of my own. Please tell me your thought on this. Since I have an issue with a small access to the upstairs I plan to build a similar bed but by splitting the base in two (the long way) and making drawers on one side, and a hidden flip up storage beneath the mattress on the other. They would be attached from behind the drawers together, and a foot and headboard made separate to cover the ends. I also think by simply extending the hardwood face on each side about 2 inches above the platform will keep the mattress in place.

So far that is the plan I have, and I would love to hear other ideas. Also I too plan to only use 3/4 ply to build no dimensional lumber. Thanks for the ideas, keep it up!
