Project Information

Well, after talking the project to death, I finally started and finished it. My wife and I are both "vertically" challenged and our age dictates that a dining room chair should no longer be an option for rummaging through the high cabinets and shelves in our closets.

Our solution was gleaned from one of the wood magazines (with a few modificatios) some planned, some necessary if you know what I mean.

Well, here it is finally.

Very nice step stool, my wife is 4 foot nothing, so I've had to make a few of these the past 36 years. mike

Nice design, Brad. It looks sturdy and well built. I will have to put one of these on my to-do list when we finish the kitchen remodel where we are putting in 39" wall cabinets.

Thanks for the post.

Most definitely need to make one of these myself. I have to really stretch to reach the attic fan vents to open them and could use one right now.
You did good on yours. Hope I can do as well.

Brad, that's a really nice piece. I like the design and the functionality of the sliding first step.
You did a great job on it.

Thanks for posting.

Very nicely done. I'm 6'4" and I still think I am going to build one of these. We tall people tend to be a little arrogant about storing things way up high…until we try to get them down and can't remember how we got them up there in the first place.

I saw a design similar to this done on the Great British Workshop on the Woodworking Channel. I like your design much better with the exposed joinery and simple lines. Great work! Just remember that those "necessary" design changes is what makes it custom woodworking!

Very Nicely done Brad, looks like an oil finish. Vertically Challenged?? We have the same problem here, seems those suttle things just creep in and makes are elder capabilities just a little bit slower. It's a good plan that makes our home less challenging!

Thanks for the kind words everyone, and thanks for looking and supporting LJ's.

Mikey…i first sealed the red oak with bulls eyes sealer, then applied about 5 coats of natural danish oil. I love the finish and it is almost "idiot proof", which is a good venue for me.

I'm, working on a stool for me now, much simpler design and should go a little faster. It will be a modified shaker step stool. I'm making it to sit outside my personal basement shower. I'll share it when i finish, and share some of the details then. I'm using a wood that I didn't even know you could use for woodworking projects.

great looking stool-I made one just like it (but with flush tenons) a couple of years back and it is used almost daily.
