Project Information

I don't need another awl or marking knife, but I like making simple tools. Harbor Freight had a sale last weekend. While there I saw some knives for portable planers. They are about 3/8" wide and over 12" long. I thought they would make better marking knife blades than the reciprocating saw blades I've been using. I was right. After grinding off the sharp planer blade sides it was easy to grind a nice marking knife blade. Thanks to Derek Cohen who has a great site (intheworkshop.com) and whose basic design I used.

I bought a very cheap awl at HF thinking to turn a better handle. I really like the handle. It feels good in my hand. I was disappointed with the quality of the steel. I sanded it a bit and there is copper colored metal beneath the silver surface material. No idea what it is.

I expect it was nickel plated. When they nickel plate certain metals they plate it in copper first so the nickel coating will stick.

Nice looking tools

I love the shape of the knife handle. That sure is pretty.
