Project Information

Made the presentation to my friend Paul today. I'm happy to say I surprised him with it.

When I first contemplated trying make and sell wooden toys and knickknacks to make a few bucks in September of 2012, my shop tools consisted of a table saw, 12" band saw and a bench top drill press. Shortly after that a fellow from our church heard what I was up to and offered to give me a 16" 2-speed Dremel Scroll Saw he wasn't using. The rest, as they say, is history.

I've since given the Dremel to my son, after getting a second saw. I was looking for a way to thank my benefactor when I saw the plans for this fire truck on ToyMakingPlans.com
Paul is a Captain of a Fire Department, so I figured this would be perfect. (Though to be perfectly honest, the only parts I cut out on a scroll saw was the plaque.

It just needs to have the plaque mounted and then a final clear coat and it'll be ready to present this weekend.
Just my way of saying Thanks.

Having been a volunteer fireman for several years; now long ago and far away!; I Know he will LOVE IT!

Very nicely done, all firepersons love vintage firetrucks, big and small!.

It will be one of his treasued possesions.

I had one of the 16" 2 speed Dremels-very good little saw. I sold it to move here and wish that I would have kept it. I now run anothe fine saw a DeWalt 788.

Very cool looking Truck. And I think that painting this one made it even better.

Arrgh, just realized that the last part of my post about painting got lost.

I used to avoid painting cause it took forever for the paint I was using, spray enamel, to cure. Then a fellow crafter suggested Krylon. Stuff sprays and covers well, and cures fast, even in my unheated shop. I use the indoor/outdoor stuff, lots of colors and white or black primers available.

Great looking truck, very nice work. I'm sure it will be much appreciated.

How were the plans? Haven't bought one of theirs yet, but they seem to have some nice stuff.

Their plans are very, very detailed. They give you full size plans that will print on 8.5×11, plus a parts list and full size drawings of all parts. But be careful and check dimensions listed against drawings and assembly. I found a couple instances in a couple where the listed dimensions didn't match the drawing, and after checking against the assembly found the drawing was the correct one. (After which I had to remake the part!)
I've built at least 5 of their designs, and on a scale of 1-10 I'd rate them a solid 9.

Thanks for the reply Dan. I've been looking at some of their plans, but needed to justify the cost. They sound like they might be worth it. Thanks again.

Keep an eye on their website as select plans go on sale from time to time.
